Rule of Life no. 54? Never turn down an opportunity to go to an Elton John Party! The flamboyant singer is renowned for his spectacular soirées, generally to raise funds for The Elton John AIDS Foundation, so when Dr. Hermann Buehlbecker of Lambertz Confectionery Company (they were also one of the event’s sponsors), invited me along as a guest of him and his beautiful partner, that rubber arm of mine was bent right back! Elton’s Annual Winter Ball, sponsored by Grey Goose, was designed and hosted by none other than Jean Paul Gaultier. The bubbly French designer turned an old south-east London warehouse (the site of the soon-to-be American Embassy), into a luxe pink lace, blue-floodlit, French-style boudoir dubbed ‘Maison de la Mode’. Huge elaborate chandeliers glistened from the ceiling above the many tables full of guests enjoying the three-course meal. The cocktail reception area beside the ballroom featured enormous planets and a spectacular full moon beamed onto the dark walls, before transforming into a nightclub post-dinner with a stunning laser beam show.
Guests included Liz Hurley and her husband, Arun Nayer – a charming couple; actress Gemma Arterton and her new hubby – such a sweet girl and so slender and pretty in person; Daisy Lowe, a couple of The Saturdays, lots of TV personalities and of course Elton, his husband David Furnish and Mr. Gaultier who was incredibly friendly and grinning all night! After the meal, Elton performed a superb 40 minute set on the piano which had the entire room in standing ovation. Lily Allen had been scheduled to perform on the night, but we were informed that she was suffering a virus and, being pregnant, had decided to stay home and rest. Only a couple of days later the sad news emerged that Lily and her partner, Sam Cooper, had tragically lost their baby at 6 months old – the second miscarriage for Lily. Such devastating news and my heart really goes out to them both.
The night was a great success (plus the clocks went back so we all enjoyed the extra hour!), raising over £600k for the charity.
I’d like to say a special thank you to Coco Boutique on Clarendon St., Dublin, for the dark silver metallic Anoushka G dress, it was perfect for the event and received loads of compliments!
